I enjoyed several of the posts here....I thought some of you gentlemen could offer advice. First off, I appreciate fully the sound of stock vintage artchtops...I've owned several, including a Gibson Barney Kessel with PAFs, a Guild Duane Eddy, and several other Gibson ES-series guitars. I recently bought an Ibanez AG-75 archtop on a whim. It has dimensions similar to a George Benson, 24-3/4" scale...nothing to write home about really. But I though it would be a good candidate for some...

Apart from having my Hopf archtop refretted soon, I'm considering some minor upgrades.
I wanna replace the cheesy (non-original) tuners for something really nice. I'm not that well-educated on tuning machines, though, any recommendations what to get and where to get it? Walter?
Moreover, the original pickguard is missing and I think it'd look much better with a black (or dark tortoise or something) guard.
Good news for hollowbody players : I was looking at Seymour Duncan's site, and there are three "new" pickups in the custom shop section.
They now offer reproductions of DeArmond 200 ("dynasonic"), Gibson "Charlie Christian", and the staple-pole dogear pickups Gibson used to use on higher end archtops in the mid-fifties.

They're not cheap of course, but all my experiences with Duncan pickups have been good, and previously the only other option was...

I have a Silvertone hollowbody (made by Kay in the 50's) it is 17 inches wide and 3 inches deep (pictures and full description in the Repairs section of this web site under the "Case Repairs" thread I started.) It has the chrome covered pickup sometimes referred to as "speedbumps. Anyway, the pickups are very low output. I usually gig with a Fender Deluxe amp (20 watts or so) and I have plenty of power for my other guitars (tele, 335 with p90's and Les Paul with P90's). However...

I know a lot of us here have an aversion to humbuckers, and as a Guild or Gibson fan, it can be frustrating. There seems to ge a growing number of humbucker sized "P90" on the market, but this one is supposed to be based on a Kay "Kleenex Box" p'up. I am looking for a vintage 40's and 50's blues tone. I am into West Coast style blues. What do you recommend? The two at the top of my list are Lollar's and Lindy Fralins. Guild had their Franz made P-90's that are just killer sounding.

The Gibson P-90's from the 50's helped define jazz and early rock and roll. Just listen to the 50's Chuck Berry recordings and you can hear P-90's. In a jazz vein Grant Green and Kenny Burrell used P-90 equipped guitars.
